Highlighting Noteworthy KCEA Members

Jay O’Neal is an activist in every sense of the word. Relatively new to West Virginia (he moved to Charleston in the summer of 2015), Jay quickly became actively involved in the Kanawha County Education Association. He became building representative at Stonewall Jackson Middle School, and attended the WVEA Delegate Assembly in Charleston in April. Jay was also selected as a delegate to the National Education Association Representative Assembly in Washington DC in early July, helping to form the policies and political action of our organization.

A 7th grade English teacher, Jay actively looks for educational opportunities. He was recently honored to be chosen as a NEH Summer Scholar, participating in a three-week in-depth study of Appalachian literature at Shepherd University, “Voices from the Misty Mountains”, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Jay knows that being active gives him a voice in his profession, saying, “KCEA and WVEA are important to me. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and complain, but if, as teachers, we want to see better schools then we have to get involved and actively push for them.
