WVEA member Debra O’Dell accomplished much in her 36 years of
teaching social studies at Herbert Hoover High School. A winning tennis,
basketball and volleyball coach, Debra also found success coaching
We the People student team in knowledge of the Constitution,
making 5 trips to the national competition.
Debra was named the 2010 recipient of the American Lawyers Auxiliary (ALA) High School Law-Related Education Teacher of the Year Award, accepting the award in San Francisco. Other recognition has included the Apple Award from the WVDE, and her selection in the Transatlantic Outreach Program, for the best and most qualified K-12 social studies educators to experience modern Germany in person. Debra’s family includes husband Ken, two daughters and a grandson, and her extended family includes many former students who have become good friends. “Being part of the WVEA/KCEA family has always been so important to me,” said Debra, who has been an especially active member, participating in the teacher strike, and assisting other teachers with grievances. Debra was instrumental in helping summer school teachers receive their regular daily rate of pay and credited sick days. Debra O’Dell says “being a WVEA member throughout my career has sustained me, knowing I was legally represented and in dealing with PEIA issues and legislative policy. I would not teach one day without being a member of WVEA/KCEA.”
